Liceo Scientifico "Galileo Galilei": a short overview
Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei is a modern institution always aware of the changing times and constantly dedicated to the welfare of its pupils.
Since it was established in 1962, the school has striven to pursue and maintain high academic standards and to keep up with the evolution of curricula, methodology and academic work. In 1992, among the first nationwide, our school designed and published the Progetto Educativo d’Istituto, ( School Educational Plan), an innovative document which deeply shaped the working of teachers by focusing it on the criteria of a well-planned syllabus and on the assessment of teaching practices.
In the last few years, Liceo Scientifico Galileo Galilei has progressively enhanced and promoted further changes in order to provide wider opportunities to its school population and effectively accommodate individual demands. These changes have mainly envisaged the goals of ongoing curriculum development and the updating of teaching strategies.
Nowadays, through pilot courses, we intend to offer more relevant foundations to scientific areas while still maintaining a truly fond interest in the Humanities and Fine Arts which significantly characterise the profile of our lycee. The teaching of Mathematics, ICT (information and communication technology ), Physics, Chemistry, Science and Foreign Languages is fully implemented through the use of multi media laboratories and the provision of new, in-depth learning modules. The teaching of the Humanities, on the other hand, by capitalising on the revision of syllabus contents, complementarily provide students with solid cultural basis and knowledge for a realistic and meaningful understanding of today’s world.
In recent times autonomy and disapplication of national statutory requirements have granted us considerable flexibility which has allowed to manage daily and weekly teaching time in a way which maximises pupils’ learning and achievement. Our school calendar and timetable have consequently been forged so as to ensure a considerable choice of high-quality courses as well as support activities, remedial work, a five-day week scheme, on request, and beneficial mid-term breaks - though practically leaving unchanged the two-hundred annual days of teaching activity foreseen at national level.
We meant to do all this because our aim was to create a modern school, a lively environment of learning excellence for young people who want to attain maturity while seriously involved in their studies and in a fair spirit.
